KATY UPDATE

Katy was hit by a car in Kentucky at the age of about three months. She was then thrown over a 6’ fence into a shelter enclosure.

In September 2007, at the age of about 4 months, Katy was transported to FFN. After x-rays revealed that Katy had a broken tibia, femur and pelvis, Katy was taken to a specialist and subsequently underwent surgery on October 25, 2007.

During surgery, the ball of Katy’s femur was removed because it was crushed and unable to be repaired, and thankfully, her leg was saved. Because of the age, location and the fact that it was healing well on its own, her pelvis was not operated on. Katy’s injured leg is now slightly shorter than her other one, but it makes no difference to her.

Katy came home the day after her surgery and immediately started a rigorous physical therapy regiment. Her exercises included flexing and extending her joints in her leg to keep them flexible, walking up stairs and steep hills to make her use her leg, and rotating her hip back to encourage her range of motion in that leg. Katy did not enjoy her therapy, and even cried out at times because of the discomfort, but through it all remained patient, loving and forgiving. As the weeks progressed, Katy began using her leg more and more.

Katy now has her own forever family. Her recovery has progressed quickly, and she uses her leg almost all the time, even when running and jogging. She occasionally forgets that her right back leg was broken, and she’ll hop along on it while holding up her left leg! When Katy’s new family joined her foster family for a PetSmart shopping spree to pick out her new belongings, Katy had a blast picking out toys, treats, clothing, and beds, Katy even went so far as to climb onto a store shelf to try out a new bed!

Despite her rough past, Katy has always had a smile on her face and always adored everyone she meets, especially kids. She never let her leg keep her from playing with the other dogs, running outside or just enjoying life.

Katy is 9 months old now and is doing the typical adolescent dog stuff, which occasionally includes chewing things she’s not supposed to. She loves going for walks and is very athletic. She loves her toys and will squeak them non-stop. Katy starts out the night on her 13-year old human sister’s bed, but midway through the night heads down the hall to her parents room to join them for the rest of the night. Thanks to the love and dedication of her foster family, Katy is living a full and wonderful life!

FFN was able to help Katy because of monetary contributions for events like our annual Strikes for Strays Bowl-a-Thon. Katy is just one of many animals in need of FFN’s help - and we thank each and every one of our supporters and contributors who allow us to continue to made that possible!
