Thanks to West Perry’s Alternative Education Class!

Students in West Perry’s Alternative Education class recently raised over $600.00 to donate to Furry Friends Network. The project took a great deal of time and teamwork by various groups of people. The students, along with the help of Mr. Eddy, Middle School Counselor, designed a commercial promoting the contest to air on the televised morning announcements at the high school. With Mr. Eddy’s keen editing skills, the students were able to create a commercial featuring “Howlin’ Homedawg Hank”, a black lab who appeared to be talking and giving details of the contest. For the next week, students at both the middle and high schools could enter their pets in the following categories: Cutest, Ugliest, Best-Dressed, Mustang Pride Pet, and Teacher’s Pet. Over 80 pets were entered, including a llama, turtle, deer, and goat. During the next week, students could vote for their favorite pet during lunch by making a monetary donation into a pet’s can. The pet who raised the most money in each category was declared the winner. The winners were as follows:

West Perry High School
Cutest: Buddy, dog, owned by Josie Zendt
Ugliest: Dear, deer, owned by Brandon Lowe
Best-Dressed: Peanut, dog, owned by Casey Miller
Mustang Pride Pet: Sammy, horse, owned by Brittny Page
Teacher’s Pet: Jaeger, dog, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bandura

West Perry Middle School
Cutest: Buster, dog, owned by Bryce Stambaugh
Ugliest: Willie, dog, owned by Jenny Kenny
Best-Dressed: Lexi, dog, owned by Courtney Bowersox
Mustang Pride Pet: Daizzy, dog, owned by Emily Winters
Teacher’s Pet: Clyde and Carter, dogs, owned by Ms. Stanley

Winners received a pet Easter basket containing a rubber toy donated by Steckley’s Pet Center, a ball, and some homemade dog treats that were made by Brittany Bowersox and Ashley Lilly. All proceeds from the contest were donated to Furry Friends Network.

The dog shown in the photo with the students is available for adoption. Her name is Kahlua and she is a 16 month old Rottweiler. If you are considering adopting Kahlua or another of our wonderful pets, please review How to Adopt.

A big THANK YOU to St. Catherine's 8th grade class for choosing FFN as their project!

It's been an exciting year for the 8th grade students at St. Catherine Laboure School, in Harrisburg. As part of their Caring Classrooms/Helping Hands project for the 2006-2007 school year, they chose the Furry Friends Network. Since September, the students have been very busy helping this wonderful organization geared towards helping unwanted pets.

Their first activity was a blessing of the animals by the parish priest in October, during which students handled several Furry Friends foster dogs. Throughout the following months, over $1100 total was raised and donated to help fund this organization. A penny war, a pet-photo contest, and a school-wide dress down day in which students paid $1, were just a few of the fundraisers that were held. In addition, collection boxes were located in both 8th grade homerooms for pet food, pet toys, cat litter, cleaning supplies, towels, and pet treats.

Several speakers came to the school to address a variety of animal-related issues, and one of those speakers was Robin Scherer, director of Furry Friends. The school year concluded with students collecting pet food/supply coupons. Students also attended several functions during the school year, coordinated by the Furry Friends Network, to show their support. Because of their dedication and hard work, the 8th graders at SCLS learned the importance of treating animals with respect, caring for them in a kind and loving way, and supporting rescue efforts.
